Conditions were as follows: ab requests pages from perlbal or pound over localhost loopback. Perlbal or pound distributes these requests among 25 off-peak loaded apaches. The request is for a redirect served from apache (not PHP) , specifically http://www.wikipedia.com/. A quick test indicates that each apache can serve about 800-1000 such requests per second over localhost loopback, under the same load conditions.
